I make it up as I go.
Yeah, I read, and experiment, and test my hypotheses, but there is no rule book to life. People have tried. There are good models, enough for you to choose the one that kinda, sorta applies to you. But like Ontario, life is yours to discover.
That is one of the things I like most about freeform music and writing. There is no script, it is up to the inspiration. It is following a wave as you let it take you. It is getting swept up by the wind.
It is what I love about solo travelling. Not knowing where tonight will lead, or which way I’ll be heading by tomorrow morning.
Sometimes I can believe that I need to get wrapped up into plan. That I need to know exactly, where and when and why. But there is something incredibly freeing about improv. Because when it really comes down to it, there is no plan.
It is a love of play. Where anything is possible. It is believing in the potential of things. Not crushing ideas as they are born, but nurturing and encouraging. That is a beautiful aspect of the improv, the willingness to move forward with the piece. To continually improve. To develop. To expand and explore the idea as far as it will go.
It is a vibe. The willingness to flow. To move with the unexpected. The willingness to abandon the plan when the moment is right.
I do enjoy a good plan too. I enjoy structures. Compositions.
I suppose what I find is a middle ground where I am never stuck to the plan. Like being committed to a sinking ship. I am willing to jump ship if the moment demands it, or even just requests it because of the notion of greater freedom or fulfillment.
I am an explorer of ideas.
Not every idea ends in glory. Some are dead ends. Some lead into dirty ditches that get you all muddy and musty. But some lead to metaphorical riches.
Some songs are born from a tiny deviation which turns upon a mysterious creation. The willingness to step into the unknown requires a courage.
Some paintings begin without a plan. They are allowed to happen.
It is a gift to exist in a space which trusts in the process.
It is the freestyle which unfolds with perfect eloquence as it elucidates the timeless truth.
The jam session is a way of life. It is commitment to evolution through trial and error. It opens to all possibility in the name of discovery. Revolutionary discoveries.
As I step into the play space I let go of the notions of what I need to be and I let my real self shine. I let go of the need to hold myself in any specific way and it allows for a pure expression of self.
It is in these moments, where the guard is down that the inner guide glows with truth. And the more I let the guide lead, the more confidently he believes that he holds the key to my success.
The jam session is a celebration of the unfolding beauty that happens through creativity. It births the unexpressed into the known world. Unfurling is the case I make as I wake into the power of possibility.
I am a creator and I let go of fear as my truth rises to be seen. I am heard when the critic is silenced and the child is freed.
I learn when I let myself be free. I hear where I truly stand and what I truly value.
I honour the ability to speak freely.
There are times where I have no idea what will come, but I trust myself enough to speak from the heart. It is the most sincere form of communication that I have. It is not rehearsed; it is poetic verse that flows from the fountain of my faith.
As I find comfort in this unfiltered expression it becomes an obsession. I feel the need to speak with this authenticity. Realistically it is the freest form of communication. It is liberation. It is the souls vocation to release. It is ease.
It is not forced, but it comes with unparalleled power. It is the hour of dawn – the rising of the truth.
As I play this inspired tune I am given the clues as to the direction in which to move.
The unknown is my muse, and I pursue her with excitement.
